Understanding Personality Types: Red and Blue – The DISC Guide

In late 2024, I read a thought-provoking book titled “Surrounded by Idiots” by Thomas Erikson. Despite the controversial and seemingly demeaning title, the book doesn’t label people as idiots. Rather, it provides valuable insights into understanding the different personality types around us and how best to communicate with them.

During our year-end retreat, I decided to take the team on a self-awareness journey using the DISC personality model, which categorizes personalities into four types: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue. The goal was to improve our communication skills, minimize conflict, and enhance relationships in both personal and professional settings.

The DISC Personality Types: A Quick Overview

The DISC model classifies personality types by color, with each type having its unique traits, strengths, and weaknesses. Here’s a breakdown of each personality type:

1. Red (Dominant)

Traits: Decisive, ambitious, competitive, result-oriented, confident, and direct.

Strengths: Strong leadership skills, quick decision-making abilities, and goal-oriented.

Weaknesses: Can be impatient, demanding, insensitive, and sometimes aggressive.

Communication Style: Prefers brief, direct conversations and values confidence and competence.

2. Yellow (Influential)

Traits: Optimistic, enthusiastic, sociable, spontaneous, and creative.

Strengths: Charismatic, inspirational, and excellent at networking.

Weaknesses: Easily distracted, disorganized, and may avoid conflict or responsibility.

Communication Style: Enjoys engaging, energetic conversations and responds well to positivity.

3. Green (Stable)

Traits: Loyal, empathetic, calm, patient, and reliable.

Strengths: Team players, good listeners, and excellent at building relationships.

Weaknesses: Resistant to change, indecisive, and avoids confrontation.

Communication Style: Prefers calm, harmonious discussions and values personal connection.

4. Blue (Conscientious)

Traits: Analytical, detail-oriented, structured, precise, and logical.

Strengths: Excellent at planning, thorough, dependable, and organized.

Weaknesses: Can be overly critical, perfectionistic, and too focused on details.

Communication Style: Prefers clear, well-organized information and values logic over emotion.

My DISC Personality: Red and Blue

After completing the self-awareness journey, I found myself labeled predominantly as Red and Blue. Strengths: As a Red, I’m known for being a strong leader, goal-focused, and decisive. My Blue traits give me a high standard for quality, a passion for detail, and a strong desire for organization.

Weaknesses: My high standards can sometimes lead to tight deadlines and a “cutthroat” approach, which can be demanding for others. I was affectionately nicknamed “High Level” by my team, but in my case, it really means “in full detail.” I tend to ensure that everything is thoroughly done, often under a tight timeline.

Key Takeaways for 2025

Looking forward to 2025, I plan to focus on improving my flexibility and managing expectations better, while staying true to my high standards. While I promised myself I’d try to do better, let’s be honest—when you value quality, thoroughness, and speed, being a Red and Blue is who I am. 😊

Take the DISC Self-Assessment

Curious about which personality type you are? I encourage you to take the DISC self-assessment and discover whether you fall into the Red, Yellow, Green, or Blue category—or perhaps a combination of them. Understanding your own personality type can help you improve communication, enhance relationships, and achieve greater success in both your personal and professional life.
